Frank Serpa founded the Serpa Automotive Group 25 years ago, with Avante Mazda, in Richmond Hill, one of the GTA’s Original Six Mazda dealerships. Serpa now presides over the Serpa Automotive Group and its five business units, Serpa Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM, Serpa Automotive Boutique, Serpa Motorsports, Serpa Collision Centre and Toronto Automotive Finance Solutions. Avante remains in the Group’s lifeblood and in its heart but was sold in 2016; Serpa BMW left the group in 2017.
Frank Serpa’s story has been told many times but is even more inspiring today, as it hardly ever happens anymore. Francesco (Frank) Serpa was just a kid from College Street, Little Italy, who came to Canada as a boy but had a dream. The Canadian Dream. He started as a cleaner of luxury vehicles. The first rung on the ladder upward was when Frank became an apprentice technician and earned an interprovincial mechanic's license. He is most likely among the few dealer principals who started in the back shop and worked his way up. Moving out of car repairs, he then organized car deliveries in a Honda dealer, then became Sales Associate, earning a Sales Master title, and then Assistant Manager before finally launching Avante Mazda.
“We truly can meet all automotive needs and we do so the same way we always have: the best customer service anywhere and ‘stress-free, once price buying’ with no Admin or hidden fees so that customers understand that they truly are obtaining ‘The Real Deal.’”
Stefano Serpa directly operates Serpa’s Aurora business units, Serpa Automotive Boutique and Serpa Motorsports and also has Group-wide responsibilities. He has developed the Boutique’s innovative concept: Any Car, Anytime Anywhere. Stefano grew up with ‘oil in his blood.’ He started out washing vehicles, running around the Avante Mazda service area with a washer fluid bottle, demanding to top up the engine compartment’s tanks. It was a kind of family tradition, starting at the bottom. He joined Serpa BMW after graduating from Brock University in June 2012 and can still remember the first BMW he sold, although now he has graduated to such world-renowned marques at the Boutique, including McLaren, Ferrari, Rolls-Royce and Porsche. “My favorite part of the job is seeing the pure excitement from clients when they pick up their beautiful vehicle. It feels good knowing I was a part of something memorable.”
Mike has been riding motorcycles most of his life. He thinks of himself as a ‘bike kind of person. ‘Having grown up in Italy, where Vespas were the key mode of transportation, he can hardly remember when he wasn’t on a motorcycle. He too came to us from the former Newmarket motorcycle shop we took over. He stays in touch with his native Italy by frequent travel to the Montecassino area, where he grew up. That city was the scene of one of the most dramatic World War II battles. The father of three, he owns a Boxer and says that he’s a ‘straight up, honest shooter.’ He says he’s here to “help out” motorsports customers with his deep knowledge and understanding which bike would be the best for each customer.
Richard joined the Group in 2018, after 20 years in the automotive business, with several leading brands including Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM. He began as an apprentice and earned his auto mechanics certificate, levels one and two, at Centennial College. Richard is unusual in that he is an expert in both autos and motorcycles, quite an asset for the Serpa Automotive Boutique as well as Serpa Motorsports. In addition, he is also devoted to the best care for our clients, in fact having finished in second place nationally in a Volkswagen customer service competition. Born in Vancouver, in his spare time Richard enjoys boating, fishing and camping and is the father of two girls, 14 and 8.
Jason Kay had an unusual move into the motorsports industry: he was building custom golf clubs when he met people from the predecessor dealership to Serpa Motorsports. They realized he had a winning sales-oriented personality and while he started in the sales side, he soon gravitated to the shop in 2007, where he is happiest. He comes by it honestly, as both his grandfather and father were mechanics, working on motorcycles. His grandmother said he shouldn’t be a mechanic but it was in his blood. He used to own several sports bikes but now relaxes with his fishing boat. “Building connections with clients is what it’s about,” said Jason. “If you forge a connection, they will follow you. And many have from our former store, once they see how well the business is run here and what working at Serpa is all about.”
